Tough Doodles

I've been drawing my Tough Cooking characters a lot.
Some sketches are me exploring with the characters and their designs/personalities. The rest are fun silliness.

Sketch Practice: Mickey & Co

I wanted to get some drawing practice in today. I decided to draw character poses from cartoons like what we would do in animation class. I've heard from other artists that studying classic cartoons is a great way to understand how the creator's did things and to improve your drawing skills as well. So I decided to practice from an old Mickey Mouse cartoon "Mickey's Trailer." It was one of my favorite episodes as a kid so I thought it'd be fun. It had a lot of great poses and expressions.

Mole So Die Changes and Diamond Baako!

I've been thinking about making changes to my Mole So Die book
Including the story, character designs, and contents of the book itself.
I went through it with sticky notes and wrote down what I would like to change.

Some things I would like to change are the formatting of the book, the style of the drawings, and I want to add some storyboards that I could put into my portfolio.

I started off working on one of the changes that I have been thinking about for a while.
Baako's design.
His current design was more triangular and generic than desired. I wanted to change his body shape and make it more square or rectangular, but also interesting at the same time. Squares equal sturdiness and Baako is a pretty sturdy and stable guy. So it should show in his design.

With the addition of Little Red Riding Hoodie concept sketches.

At some point I took a square and rotated it to see how it would look and ended up with Diamond Baako. I'm not sure if it's because the shape is dynamic or just plain silly, but I really like how diamond Baako looks. So right now I'm settling with this design. I'm still going to work with it more to figure out how he's going to move. Especially with his new lacking-a-neck situation.

I'm not sure if he's a square shaped character now since he's a diamond. He's a rotated square but maybe that will make him two triangles instead of one square, I'm not sure. I'm not knowledgeable of shape law. At least when he wears his clothing he has a squaretangular silhouette. So I'll call his a square until something says otherwise.
Mission Accomplished!

I was also considering changing the heights of the three main characters. I'm liking the idea of Thema being the tallest in the group. It works with her alpha-dog-like personality, loo king down on others who aren't as strong as her.

Also including some silly extra doodles.
Well that is all for now!
I'll be working a lot with the designs of the characters and their world throughout the Summer.
So more to come!

I was sketching my dogs the other day. They're always moving so it's like a fun challenge to capture the gesture before it's gone.

People Sketchin'

These are some of the sketches from Commercial Figure Drawing where we went around the Short North and would draw people from life.
I was mostly working with perspective and space between figures.
