Indoor Zoo Adventures

Over the Spring Break I made time to go to the Zoo to draw the animals.
It was still very cold so I stayed mostly in the indoor exhibits. Fun reptile and sea life drawings all around! I also made my way by the apes because they are so fun to draw. Especially the mandrills with their colorful faces. They always provide interesting poses to draw.

Music Video Storyboards

In video class we started our music video assignment.
Storyboards were due a couple week ago. The song that I chose was Fireflies by Owl City. My plan is to make an abstract video playing with lights and other things that glow. I think it'll be a nice change from the actor-centered videos I did for earlier assignments in this class.

These are the thumbnails and storyboards for this project. I didn't really have a specific order in mind except for the parts that went with the lyrics.
It'll be interesting to see how this one turns out in the end.

Here's the song.

Museum Sketches

I went to the art museum with my friend a while ago. We went to see the Rothko pieces and after that we took a break and drew some of the pieces in the exhibits.

Knight Sketches

These are some sketches of Knight that I've done within the past few weeks.

Early storyboards or keyframe ideas for my special effects animation that I drew in my mini sketchbook.

The other one is a sketch I did while at the art museum.
This was not long after I decided that I wanted Knight's sword to glow and be partially rebuilt with his radioactive powers. I was working with lighting and liked the idea of Knight using his sword as a torch to light his way through dark areas, like a post-apocalyptic adventurer.

Special Effects

Here's an update of what I have so far of my SFX animation.

I finished the first pass of roughs.
Smoke was added as a second effect and the background was started. The smoke was especially tricky to animate and I had to redo a couple times. Looking at Disney movies for reference helped a lot.

I plan to start a second pass over spring break if I get the time.

Mole So Die Revisited

I've recently decided that I want to redesign the main characters of my Mole So Die
Not as much physically as mentally.
I felt that their personalities and reputations were too similar, so I wanted to make them more distinct from each other. Especially Baako and Thema because they were both the "good role model" character and then they were going to be childhood friends and just made them more like clones of each other. And why have two of the same character?
That lead to this sketchbook page which is more notes than drawings.

Now Baako keeps his "role-model" status while Thema is more aggressive and rebellious. Baako is the person who does what he's told without question. He doesn't like the idea of stepping out of bounds or going against his superior's orders and everyone looks up to him because of that. So when he has to team up with Thema and Amadi, who have less respect for rules and authority, he gets pushed into unwanted situations and feels frustrated.
Thema then becomes this super competitive and aggressive character. She has the passion and strength to do what ever she pleases, she just lacks control. She'd be a productive member of society if she could only get her attitude adjusted. In addition Baako and Thema aren't going to start out as friends in the story anymore either. Now that their views are extremely different from each other.
Amadi's personality didn't change too much. He's more introverted with his anger and distrust of other instead of just being outward about it. I also thought that it'd be good to make him more adventurous which would help explain why he enjoys exploring the Savannah and has less fear of the forest than the others. He would be more curious of what was out there.
After the personalities I thought about their relationships with each other. I made a little chart that might be hard to read, but what it is basically saying is that each of the three characters can find something that they agree and disagree with each other. For example, Thema and Baako both view Amadi as a spoiled brat who just wants attention At the same time Baako doesn't appreciate Thema's rude and violent attitude towards him and others, and Thema doesnt like how Baako is so strict to the rules and puts himself above others because he follows said rules. So even if the three do end up being able to work together they'll never be able to fully agree on everything.
Hopefully all of this will help these guys be more developed and believable and hopefully I didn't bore anyone with all of this text.
There will be more development on these characters in the future.
That's all for now folks!

Hand and Foot

These are some hand and feet studies that I did for Commercial Figure Drawing.
It was a good exercise since I really needed the practice with those.

Animation and The Next Project

So I finished my rough to sound animation last week.

It was a really fun animation to do because the characters' personalities were in great contrast. Plus angry characters are fun because all of their actions get to be exaggerated and pushed to extremes.
After critiques we did some warm up drawings from watching PaperMan.

The next animation project is Special Effects. There was a list of effects to choose from and I started out quickly sketching ideas; like hair underwater and rusting armor.

Now I am thinking of animating Knight and his glow-ie radiation powers. I like the idea of having his powers be tied to his emotions, so when he gets angry he explodes into this angry ball of radioactive energy. In addition I sketched out what it would look like if knight used his powers to build the rest of his broken sword and a quick idea sketch for a background for the animation. A lot of the examples our teacher showed us had amazingly drawn backgrounds. So I plan to accept the challenge and make a amazing background. It's gonna be good!

I'm thinking that Knight's glow-ie-ness will move like fire or really thick smoke. I got some reference photos and broke them down into shapes.

Then I drew out my key frames and some ideas of how the fire/energy will move.

New Player Has Arrived!

I've been thinking of adding another character to the radioactive knight group lately. I like the idea of having Knight and Freckles' group of wanderers gradually gaining members as they progress with their journey. Having to adjust to the newest member's personality and eventually becoming this small band of misfits traveling through the apocalyptic wasteland.

This new member is lawyer lady. She'll have a better name soon.
She and her family were out of town with the meltdown happened and had to make camp on the edge of town with the other survivors. She volunteered to help the local militia to help others escape the toxic wasteland that used to be their home. She runs into Knight and Freckles along the way and tries to separate them to take Freckles back to the survivor camp, convinced that Knight has been affected by the radiation and is too dangerous to be around.

I was tweaking a character's design and I wanted to change the style of their hair. I was aiming towards the greaser look and started to draw a bunch of pompadours trying to find a style that worked.
