Weighty Character

I finished the weighty character animation for Animation 2. We had to animate our character lifting a box and and fridge to show the difference between different weights.

It's Raining Random Objects!

The next animation assignment after Ratcliffe is objects falling with weight! The exercise was just as it sounds. We animated a group of objects falling. And had to give them believable weight.
Compared to the Ratcliffe assignment this one was really quick and fun. I think the most enjoyable part for me was the water balloon because it just bounces in the funnest way when it hits the ground.

The New Look

So you've probably noticed that everything looks different now.
Well that's because it is! Everything is different and there's nothing you can do about it!!
I was working on making a new banner and it ended up being an entire blog make over. I felt that the background was too busy and distracting from the main focus of the blog, so I wanted to tone-down the crazy and makes things look simpler and cleaner. Also the banner design that I WAS working on just didn't seem like it was going to work out in the long run. Which was cool since I changed the color palette for the blog anyway. I still wanted it to be semi-animated though! So I made three images to run in a loop around and around and around. It's not really animation but it's interesting.

If these guys look familiar its because they're the Mole So Die characters from last semester. I've been drawing Knight so much lately that I left these guys neglected in the earlier pages of my sketchbook. Making these banners reminded me how much fun these characters are to draw.
Well that's all for now.
Happy Sunday!

Knight Development

More radioactive knight drawings! Yaaay!
Just exploring the characters more.

I started finalizing the girl's design and gave her a better name. I also made a color palette that goes well with her character. Knight already had a palette but I experimented with colors to use for shading his face.

I was thinking about what kind of kid Pre-Knight would be again. I'm now leaning towards the awkward, loner kid who has no fashion sense. Wearing clothes that were passed down from relatives and bought from cheap clothing stores.

Today is the holiday of love! To celebrate I drew some quick valentines.
Fun pinks and reds everywhere!

Planar and Tonal Structure

We continued using planar structure in Commercial Figure Drawing.

And then we used charcoal working on tonal structure.

Knight Evolution

So, I was browsing Tumblr one day and found this art challenge where you create a "character evolution".
Instead of creating a new character I wanted to use Knight and treat the challenge as a stage in his life, instead of a form that he could change into. I was trying to approach it as one of the possible results when Knight would grow up to a bigger knight.

The overall idea of it is that Knight would grow up to be this guardian that would protect the general area which would probably still be a wasteland. He would be an adult too so I tried to come up with ideas for how older Knight would look.

I'm not really sure if this is how Knight will be at the end of his story/journey but it was a really fun "What if?!" to play with.

Radioactive Scenery

I'm starting to think about making a color script or two to practice color and environmental composition.
So far I only have some sketches.

The first thing that came to mind when I was thinking of ideas was the desolate renaissance fair grounds after the tragic nuclear explosion.  I was thinking of having it be a vast wasteland full of once-colorful flags and whatever else was left of the cheerful past.

Fabric and Planar Structure

On the second week of Commercial Figure Drawing we worked with the folds of fabrics and drawing with planar structure. I'v heard of planar structure before but never really tried it out on my own before. It was definitely something different than what I was used to.

Our first animation was a inbetween, cleanup, and color animation of Ratcliffe from Pocahontas. We were given three keyframes and had to animate the rest. It was an interesting process and I feel like I've learned a lot from it.
The clean up was the biggest challenge for me because I had to be careful with keeping the lines nice and professional. That part surely took longer to finish than I was expecting.

Lately I have been thinking a lot about knight and what he would've been like before all of the nuclear and radioactive stuff. What kind of kid was he? What did he wear?

I started with what his knight costume would've looked like before the nuclear explosion ripped most of it away. I also redesigned his sword from it's futuristic look to something more classic. Since he's no longer a futuristic character in a futuristic world. Aaaaand I started to think of the motive for him being at a renaissance fair in the first place when everything happened. My favorite idea is a younger sibling who wanted him to accompany him/her/them and is now lost/missing/dead after the explosion.

After that I went to what kind of kid would he be. I'm thinking of something like the-kid-who-often-avoids-crowds either out of shyness or the dislike of other people. But I didn't want to draw him in the lonely-kid-in-a-hoodie look. I feel that I draw hoodies a lot on characters or random doodles in general, so I'm going to explore my fashion options with him.
So far I'm liking the punk/rocker look I drew towards the bottom but, I'm not sure if it fits him. So more exploration is needed there.

These are just some extra sketches for the fun of it.

Figure Drawing Sketches

In Commercial Figure Drawing we have to keep a separate sketchbook and draw every day, practicing different parts of the body's anatomy.
I've started with torsos, focusing on the bending and twisting of them.

That Sketchy 11

Some recent sketches.

I was working on ideas for the dynamic pose in Knight's model sheet for animation 2. I had trouble deciding what he should do. I made a list of things that Knight does often and drew quick gestures to help.

And then I drew a bunch of sketches of my old/less drawn characters as well. Some fun and quick stuff.
