POWER UP!

When I was first designing my tribal characters I looked at it as if they were characters in a video game.
They had stats and everything.
And then at a part in the story the characters would find these talismans that would "complete them" in a way. I didn't get very far with that idea but I remember that Amadi was going to be a fast character with not much muscle power. So when he got his talisman and "activated" it, it would give him super strength. I played with the idea of the talismans being animal based and then the characters would absorb that animal's traits through the talisman. I can't seem to remember what the other two's talismans were going to do.
But I specifically remember Amadi turning into something like a thunder powered bull.

This is a fun doodle based off one of my old sketches.

He's ready to beat up kids for their lunch money.

Student Choice Project: Week 2

So the goal for last week was to get outfit and tool designs done.
I started off with sketches.

I drew the King/Leader/Father character some more beginning to finalize his design.

Sketched some basic outfit designs, working mostly with the shapes and how it fits on the character.
More outfit sketches, focusing on Amadi and father figure.

Basket sketches. I started to think about how they would go about carrying things.
I also looked up some references as well.
I researched different types of tribes in western Africa so I could get an idea how people who lived there would dress and other things about their culture. I chose a tribe/group of people called Yoruba who lived in the Northern area of Nigeria to base off the clothing and items for my characters.

Yoruba Masks and Headdresses

I also looked up reference of how to hold a spear. I thought that it would be useful in the future.

And then I made more sketches trying to get the feel of the style of clothing.

And came up with my final designs.
I started looking at color palettes as well. The one that I chose is a combination of two different palettes that I decided to put together by taking my favorite parts of each and trying to get them to work.

Then I made different patterns for the clothing to have. I came up with the ideas by looking at reference photos and seeing what kinds of patterns they used.

Which lead to the final outfit designs.
These are just some of the different combinations that are possible with the patterns and color palette. These designs are most likely going to be used in the future though.

Unfortunately, I did not get to drawing the final weapons, tools, and items designs. So I am a little bit off schedule, but besides that everything else is right on track.

Sandy Sketch

I was distracting myself with some sketches while doing homework and ended up really liking this one.
I saw Rise of The Guardians with my family over the break and I thought that it was a lovely movie. Sandy was one of my favorite characters throughout the whole thing. He was so expressive for a little dude that didn't talk.

Student Choice Project: Week1

So for the first week I did character sketches.
I wanted to finalize the main characters who's designs were mostly worked out.

I also experimented with different mask designs.

I started designing one of the new characters, the Chief, but he needs to become more developed so there will be additional sketches of him as I continue with the project.

Then I worked on Zuberi's design. I noticed earlier that the four main characters seemed to be of the same age range and that was just no good. So I played around with "what if he was an cranky old man who wants immortal life?" But then the idea of a 70+ year old man running around the forest like he was 20 seemed really weird. So I'm thinking of having him be between his 40s and 50s.

And then more sketches. :)

Action Pose!

This was something that I was working on a bit in my free time last week.
I wanted to experiment with coloring in a sketchy style. So I went back and forth between coloring and erasing. It was a fun process and I think I'll experiment with it more to see what I can do with it.

Student Choice Project: Proposal

My proposal for this next Design for Media project is a Character Design Book.
The main focus of this book would be developing the world of a group of characters from sketches to mostly finished concepts.
In the end I plan on having ...
- character and environment sketches
- prop and outfit designs and sketches
-(maybe) color concepts
- 2-3 environment concepts
- final character concepts
- 1-3 scene pieces with characters in action
I plan to use the tribal characters that I've drawn in past posts for this project, because I would like to expand their world more.

The general look of the final product will go like this.
Pg 1-2
Pg 3-4
Pg 5-6
Pg 7-8 Ver 1
Pg 7-8 Ver 2
PG 9-10
Pg 11-12
The format might change a little as the project progresses but this is the general look of it.
As for scheduling I plan to get the sketches done by the 20th. The rest will follow after that according to the gnatt chart. The chart might have some minor changes if something comes up during production, so I'm going to keep it some-what open and flexible just in case.

Jumpin Jack - Completed Animatic with Dinos

I finished my storyboard to music animatic.
There are still some things that need changing here and there before I go to color in my spare time (Christmas break maybe).

Another thing is that The Ugly Dinosaur short film is completed.
After all of the blood, sweat, and tears we did it.

Overall, the whole experience was a lot of fun. I really learned a lot about working in a large group and I feel like I'll be more prepared for when the next big group project comes my way.
Everything about The Ugly Dinosaur and the process of making it can be seen on the blog

Ugly Dinosaur Updates- 04

Okay so final week of work.
We've been doing a lot to get the video ready by the end of the week.
I've updated both the credit list and workbook. And then I helped do some clean-up animations for those that weren't finished.

These are some of the scenes that I cleaned for the project.

That's Sketchy 10

.
These are some of my more recent sketches. Lately, I've been falling in love with using sharpies.

If you look hard enough you can see a familiar dinosaur.

I'm starting to design a new character for a storyboard idea that I want to work on in my spare time.
So far I've started with looking at hair styles.
I looked at some pictures on Google and drew over them to understand the general shape and then started sketching from there.

I was also having fun drawing sweaters since it was really cold outside and I dearly wished that I had one.

A self-sketch for a future sketch blog that will be forming soon.

And finishing off with a fun drawing I did for the Halloween season.

That's all for now!
Have a lovely day~
